This image shows an extra joint at the top right. In order to fold Knossos enough to get it into trucks for transport, this extra joint is needed. As the center of gravity is lowered, tipping is increasingly difficult. Len Harrelson of the Southern Poly Arial Robotics Group will advise on the use of these sensors. They use them to stabalize their un-manned helicopter during the &lt;a href="http://avdil.gtri.gatech.edu/AUVS/IARCLaunchPoint.html"&gt;IARC &lt;/a&gt;competition. &lt;a href="http://www.wa4dsy.net/robot/thrasher/index.html"&gt;Dale Heatherington &lt;/a&gt;has alot of experience with using piezo gyros in his bots. This helps with passive balance. Our experience has so far been that the passive linkages require power assistance. So the value of the extra mechanical complexity might be questioned. The new leg joint will require an advanced outrigger. This sketch shows the foot linked through a pivot on the ankle, to a differential of sorts in the new joint. The small model relies on a level surface for balance. Tables and floors provide this easily. On a large model that will be presented in parking lots, grass fields, and the like, an ability to sense and compensate for bumps and holes is neccessary. The sketch shows sensors located around the foot in opposing pairs. The feedback from these opposing pairs of pressure sensors drive actuators in the ankle to move the x,y orientation until all the sensors read the same stress, balancing the weight on the foot no matter the terrain. (Stuart brought this up at lunch today).&lt;br /&gt;This robot configuration mimicks a crab to accomplish this task. In this scenario, the body section is the part that must dimensionally fit through the door (26"-34"), the legs can reconfigure to "crab" through then go back to whatever shape.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The other point we discussed was that the maximum stored and folded size needs to fit into the back of an average pickup truck. Stuart and Bob will measure their trucks and we'll take the smaller of the two as the maximum. Stuart's truck will hold a 4'x6' sheet of plywood, but it has to sit above the wheel wells. It's $800, I think a better choice would be a motorcycle engine. I'm sure we an find something suitable for less. But I think we should definitely have an electric starter.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A 10 to 20hp motor for lawnmowers and such are very heavy compared to the same hp motorcycle engine. Be sure to check out the movies. This amazing walking bot even has pneumatic cannons that fire rubber balls.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;color:#3333ff;"&gt;Some of our objectives not addressed by Land Walker are:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Originality. We'ld like to break new ground artistically. (Not rely on previous science fiction and 3D games such as "Mech Warrior" or "Star Wars").&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Very compelling motion. ( The Land Walker's motion is very clever and seemingly pretty stable, but it doesn't pick up it's feet, it "shuffles" instead. It does the job, but is somehow less than satisfying).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Transportability. ( It's not obvious that there's a convenient way to put this in a truck and take it to an event ).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#3333ff;"&gt;Some of our objectives that &lt;strong&gt;are&lt;/strong&gt; addressed by Land Walker are:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Large size. (10 feet is a good size, very impressive presence. The larger the better.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Passenger carrying. ( We would like to have the option to carry one or more passengers)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Self contained power. ( There are no cables hanging from the bot leading to power supplies. You can hear a motor running in the videos. He wants a large scale version with power to carry a payload (himself).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The panel with the image is 6' tall. The original Knewt is barely 11", and is barely visible on the left. The bot in the middle is scaled to 400% making it about 44" to the top of it's head. The third model is scaled at 600% to make it 66"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The idea is to use the basic style of Knewt to outline the placement of pivot points and balance features, but redesigning to accomodate larger and stronger bearings and actuators.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hydraulic has been suggested, and we will be meeting with a hydraulics expert next month to discuss the subject.&lt;br
